March 2026 is a great moment to reflect on the practical impact of everyday digital choices. Through our ongoing support of environmental projects around the world with our eco-project partner Ecologi, we\u2019re spotlighting two initiatives that tackle a major climate challenge: landfill methane. Below, we highlight Project 1 and Project 2, both focused on capturing harmful landfill gas and turning it into useful energy.<\/p>\n

Project 1: avoiding methane emissions from landfill in Brazil<\/b><\/p>\n

Landfills are a significant source of methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide over the short term. This project captures methane from landfill gas and safely flares it, preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere where it would accelerate warming. In many cases, capturing and managing landfill gas is one of the most direct ways to reduce emissions from waste.<\/p>\n

Beyond flaring, the captured gas is used to generate electricity, helping replace fossil-fuel power on the grid. This creates a double benefit: it reduces the climate impact of waste while increasing access to lower-carbon energy. The project also supports broader sustainable development by improving local infrastructure and encouraging better waste management practices.<\/p>\n

Project 2: turning waste into clean energy in Turkey<\/b><\/p>\n

This project focuses on capturing landfill gas and using it to generate electricity, preventing large-scale methane emissions that would otherwise occur as waste decomposes. By collecting the gas through a network of wells and pipes, it turns an unmanaged environmental hazard into a controlled resource.<\/p>\n

Generating electricity from landfill gas helps reduce reliance on conventional power sources and makes better use of materials already in the waste stream. It\u2019s a strong example of how climate action can be rooted in practical engineering: measure emissions, capture them at source, and convert them into something useful for communities.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re proud to have funded the planting of 4720 trees since the start of our partnership with Ecologi over 5 years.<\/p>\n
