August 2026 is a great moment to reflect on the practical impact of everyday choices, including how we power and run websites. Through our ongoing support of environmental projects around the world with our eco-project partner Ecologi, we’re spotlighting two initiatives this month: Project 1 and Project 2, each tackling climate and sustainability challenges in a direct, measurable way.
Project 1: planting forest gardens in Busoga, Uganda
In Uganda’s Namayingo District in Busoga, many subsistence farmers rely heavily on a single staple crop: cassava. While cassava can be resilient, depending on one crop can leave families vulnerable to poor nutrition, pest outbreaks, and shifting weather patterns. A forest garden approach helps reduce that risk by introducing a wider mix of food crops and useful trees in the same growing space.
By teaching farmers how to grow multiple crops together, forest gardens support healthier diets and more stable harvests. The diversity of planting can also improve soil structure, reduce erosion, and create more reliable shade and moisture retention, helping farms cope better with heat and irregular rainfall. Over time, these gardens can become more productive, more resilient, and better aligned with local needs.
Project 2: boosting crops and soil whilst permanently locking up CO₂ with UNDO
Project 2 focuses on enhanced rock weathering, an approach that accelerates a natural process where certain rocks react with CO₂ and lock it away in stable forms. UNDO applies finely crushed silicate rock to farmland, where it can help remove CO₂ as it weathers, while also potentially improving soil health by adding minerals that support plant growth.
Recent research using large-scale models suggests that in the UK alone, enhanced rock weathering could remove up to 30 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. Beyond carbon removal, the promise of this work is its practicality: integrating with existing agricultural operations, supporting better soil performance, and delivering long-term climate benefits through durable carbon storage.
